I Got This (Matthew Ross)

by Matthew Ross

No matter what kind of life you have led, one aspect is the same for everyone: life is wildly unpredictable. That unpredictable nature will bring some incredible moments your way, but it will also bring some tragic moments. Because of that unpredictable nature, is it any wonder that we go to great lengths to minimize the surprises or the dangers that life can bring? We do everything from trying to control tooth decay to building cars around safety. When it comes to minimizing surprises and their effects on our lives, the smart phone has turned into the ultimate tool. It allows us to control all of the information about our lives and then sort it out so that there are as few surprises as possible.

With all of the effort that we put into managing our lives, it should be no surprise that we have to fight to not do the same thing in our walk with God. As Pastor Michael Escamilla illustrated for us this past weekend, if you are going to trust a stool to hold your weight, then you are only trusting it once all of your weight is on the stool. We are called to lay down our own lives and follow God, but if we are constantly trying to “help” God out and make our own plans, are we really laying down our lives to follow him?

We all struggle with completely trusting God in all areas of our lives. It’s part of our human nature. It’s easy to worry that God is not acting fast enough or that he is doing things the wrong way. We begin to second-guess whether God will do what he promised. This week, I encourage you to ask yourself if there’s an area of your life in which you are not fully trusting God. If so, take that to God in prayer and then make the effort every day to lay it at his feet. For Abraham, it took over 10 years, but God did not forget his promise to Abraham, and he will not forget his promise to you.

About Steven Gledhill

My name is Steven Gledhill, a certified substance use disorder (SUD) professional of more than two decades. I am narried with three sons and two grandsons. I recognize that every person who's ever lived is subject to the human condition, valuing self and the need for control above all else. Therefore, all are inclined to be self-centered with the preoccupation to be absolutely satisfied and comfortable. The prerequisite for satisfying comfort is the control that all seek and that none attain. Furthermore, all of us are vulnerable to temptation and challenged desperately to resist it. We have all given ourselves over to human desire and have fallen to temptation and engaged in behavior that has potential for harm and so we all have experienced harm. We have all have experienced the pain and discomfort associated with unfavorable outcomes from self-centered behavior to one degree or another. It is only in relationship with God through Jesus Christ that anyone and everyone has the opportunity for restoration from the ills of self-centered thinking and behavior. Faith in the living God when realized through experience, appeals most to our intellectual sensibilities. Transformed by a renewed mind, it is reasonable to anticipate that God is involved with us becuase of his love for us. Relationship with God is reasonable and is as real as anything you have ever seen, heard, touched, smelled, and tasted. The Bible says, "Taste and see that the Lord is good. (The word, Lord, speak's to God's sovereignty; something even Albert Einstein believed about God.)
